A ship can have radar, ECDIS, AIS, satellite communications, and a full bridge team, yet still miss a simple text warning if NAVTEX is poorly set up or ignored. That small receiver on the bridge is easy to underestimate, but it carries some of the most practical safety information a vessel receives at sea.
NAVTEX, short for Navigational Telex, is part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, known as GMDSS. It automatically receives maritime safety information such as navigational warnings, weather warnings, search and rescue information, and other urgent coastal broadcasts.
The strength of NAVTEX is its simplicity. It does not need a crew member to call a station, log into a service, or request a forecast. The equipment listens on assigned frequencies and receives messages when a coastal station transmits them. For ships trading near coasts or passing through busy traffic areas, that can make a real difference.

What NAVTEX does on board
NAVTEX delivers written maritime safety information directly to the ship. Messages appear on a screen, printer, or both, depending on the model installed. Older units may print every received message on paper. Newer units store messages electronically and allow filtering, searching, and review.

NAVTEX is mainly intended for waters within range of shore stations. It is not a long-range ocean weather system. A ship far out at sea will rely on other GMDSS services, such as SafetyNET or similar satellite-based systems, depending on the sea area and equipment fit.
The system uses medium frequency radio, so reception depends on distance, time of day, atmospheric noise, antenna condition, and interference from the ship itself. A common practical range is a few hundred nautical miles from the transmitting station, but crews should treat that as a guide rather than a promise.
The key point is this: NAVTEX turns coastal safety broadcasts into automatic written alerts. That gives the bridge team a record they can read, compare, and act on.
How NAVTEX messages are organized
NAVTEX messages are not random blocks of text. They follow a format that helps the receiver sort messages and helps the crew understand what they are looking at.
A NAVTEX message header usually includes several identifiers. The most useful ones for daily watchkeeping are the station identifier, the message type, and the serial number.

Navigational warnings, meteorological warnings, search and rescue information, and certain additional navigational warning categories are normally treated as essential. A receiver may allow many categories to be selected or rejected, but crew should avoid blocking information that affects safety.
Most international NAVTEX transmissions are sent on 518 kHz in English. Many areas also use 490 kHz for national or local language broadcasts. In some regions, 4209.5 kHz may be used, especially where medium-frequency coverage is challenging.
For bridge work, the message format matters because it supports traceability. If a warning affects the passage plan, the officer of the watch can refer to the message identity, note it in the log, and brief the master or next watch with clear details.

How crews should use NAVTEX during a voyage
NAVTEX works best when it is part of the normal bridge routine. It should not be treated as background noise or something checked only when the printer starts running.
Before departure, the bridge team should confirm that the receiver is set for the correct NAVAREA, coastal stations, and message categories. The passage plan should also identify the stations expected along the route, especially for coastal passages through several national areas.
During the voyage, the officer of the watch should review new messages regularly. A good routine includes checking NAVTEX:

The passage plan should reflect any relevant warnings. On paper charts, that may mean a note or temporary marking. On ECDIS, it may mean adding a manual note, caution area, or route check reminder according to the ship’s procedures and company policy.
Watch handover is one of the most common weak points. A message received at 0200 may still matter at 0800. If it affects the route, the outgoing watch should brief it clearly. The incoming watch should not have to rediscover it by scrolling through old messages.

No messages received
This can happen when the ship is outside station range, the wrong frequency is selected, or station filters are too narrow. It can also point to antenna damage, cable faults, power supply issues, or high onboard electrical noise.
If no messages appear for a long period near a coast where reception is expected, the crew should check the receiver settings and antenna condition. Comparing expected broadcast times with actual reception can help identify whether the issue is equipment, range, or scheduling.
Too many irrelevant messages
This often means the receiver is accepting stations far outside the voyage area or too many non-essential categories. The answer is not to silence the equipment entirely. The better answer is to select relevant stations and categories while keeping safety-critical messages active.
Repeated messages
NAVTEX receivers normally use serial numbers to avoid displaying or printing the same message again and again. Repetition may occur after memory clearing, power cycling, incorrect setup, or weak reception that causes corrupted message recognition.
Garbled text
Poor signal quality, interference, or antenna issues can cause missing characters or unreadable text. A partially corrupted message can still contain enough information to raise concern. If the subject appears urgent, the bridge team should seek confirmation through other means, such as VHF, coastal radio, safety broadcasts, or company guidance.
Printer problems
On older units, paper jams, dry printer mechanisms, or missing paper can hide received messages from the watch. If the unit also stores messages electronically, the screen should still be checked. If it does not, printer condition becomes a safety issue rather than a housekeeping matter.

Good habits that keep NAVTEX useful
The best NAVTEX practice is simple and consistent. The equipment should be tested, configured, read, and acted on as part of bridge management.
A useful bridge checklist may include:
Confirm the receiver has power and no active fault alarm.
Check that the correct frequencies are monitored.
Select stations relevant to the passage.
Keep mandatory safety message types active.
Review stored messages at each watch.
Record messages that affect the passage.
Remove expired or cancelled messages from active consideration.
Report suspected equipment faults early.
Crews should also understand the limits of filtering. Filters reduce clutter, but they can also hide useful information if set carelessly. A vessel near a boundary between coastal radio areas may need more than one station selected for a time. A ship changing trading area should not sail for days with old station settings from the previous voyage.
The master and officers should agree on what needs escalation. A routine weather forecast may only need review. A storm warning, search and rescue alert, new wreck near the route, or major navigation aid failure may need the master’s attention at once.
Training helps too. NAVTEX can look old-fashioned beside modern bridge systems, so junior officers may not give it enough attention. A short onboard session using real received messages can show how warnings connect to route safety, chart corrections, arrival planning, and heavy weather preparation.
Records also matter. Requirements vary by flag, company procedures, and vessel type, but the principle is steady: if a NAVTEX message affects the voyage, the action taken should be clear. That may be in the deck log, passage plan notes, ECDIS user chart notes, or another approved record.
