Anchor Chain

They are made up of alloy, galvanize and stainless steel that has a connecting links to the anchor, the sizes of chains and anchor are determined/installed by the ship, length, weight and environment of operation.

Types of Chain

  • Stud-link chain: Has a bar (stud) across each link for extra strength, commonly used in large ships. The studs are found at the beginning and aft of each shackles number


  • Stud-less chain: Lighter, easier to handle, often used in smaller vessels.


  • Combination chain-rope: Combination of chain with rope for flexibility. It can be found on smaller boat and yacht.

Maintenance of Anchor Chains

  1. Routine Lubrication

  2. Storing Properly

  3. Visual Inspection

  4. Opening of Anchor Wash/ running cooling

  5. Removing of debris from the chain during lowering and picking up
